How to Extend Your HVAC System’s Life

HVAC unit

Your HVAC unit is quite an expensive investment, and you become very reliant on it. However, if you don’t treat it right, you could experience problems with your investment that affect the comfort of your home. And you may find yourself purchasing a pricey replacement prematurely if you don’t care for your unit properly.

1. Change Your Air Filter

Charge your air filters on a regular basis. The dirt accumulates in the filter and prevents air from flowing through the system freely. Not only is it blocking air from cooling or heating your home, it makes your unit run harder. Less efficiency means higher energy bills for you. Additionally, when your unit runs harder than it should, you’re risking it failing prematurely.

2. Routine Maintenance and Yearly Examinations

You take yourself to the doctor’s every year for an exam and some routine procedures–well if you don’t, you should be. Your HVAC system deserves a yearly examination and routine maintenance, too. Either clean the combustion chamber or hire someone who can. This is where the gasses mix and ignite. It’s contaminated with carbon dioxide, soot and other substances. The soot could cause the chamber to rust. Inspect the flue pipe to ensure it doesn’t have holes or any visible damage, which would cause your system to work harder than necessary.

3. Lubricate Moving Components

Several parts inside of your unit move. When they’re not lubricated properly, they could grind against one another and cause damage. It’s best to regularly lubricate the moving components to prevent friction.

4. Check Your Thermostat

Make sure you’re thermostat is running properly. If it isn’t, you could find yourself running the unit too much and causing it to wear out early. Additionally, you should make sure you’re putting the unit at a reasonable temperature because if you set it lower or higher than the level most achievable, you could find your unit running all day trying to get to the right temperature without ever reaching it.
