Why Is My AC Always Running?

ac unit outside

An AC that runs normally should be such that there are on and off cycles. If your unit runs constantly during the hot summer months, this cannot only be costly but also annoying. At the same time, a unit that is always running will suffer more effects of wear and tear. In order to correct the problems, you will first need to identify them. While an air conditioner that runs non-stop may be a sign of a problem in the unit, it may also alert you about other issues in the home.

Faulty thermostat

Whenever the thermostat in your unit malfunctions, it will not prompt the unit to turn off when the desired temperature is reached. If your air conditioner is running non-stop, you should try checking the thermostat. You can also get a technician to establish whether the device needs replacing.

Clogged air filter

The air filter is meant to allow air to flow over the coils. When the air filter is full of dirt and debris, the flow of air will be restricted. This will undermine the functioning of the unit because the system will not be able to cool the surrounding air to the desired temperature. The result will be an air conditioner that runs constantly.

Incorrectly sized unit

In case you have recently renovated or changed the layout of your space, your old unit may not fit your current needs. Without a professional load calculation, the performance of the unit may be affected. This could result in the system running without the normal on and off cycles.

Leaking ducts

Old buildings are likely to have equally old ducts. Such joints on such ducts may not be sealed properly, leading to loss of cool air. When the cool air escapes, the air in the room will not reach the temperature you had set. This means that the system will keep running at all times.

Dirty evaporator coil

If your unit was not cleaned during regular maintenance, the dirt on the coils will force the unit to work harder to regulate temperatures. This will keep it always running.
